Jerry Dale Gorby, beloved father, dedicated educator, and cherished member of his community, passed away on August 11, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Marion, Ohio on November 2, 1937, as the son of the late Charles and Mildred (Keith) Gorby. A proud graduate of Caledonia High School, class of 1955, Jerry continued his studies at Ohio Northern, laying the groundwork for a career that would touch countless lives. For thirty-seven years, Jerry served as a teacher and principal in the schools of Marion, Caledonia, Martel, N. Union and Pleasant, fostering not just academic growth but lifelong curiosity and kindness in his students. Family members would frequently hear "he was one of my favorite teachers". He also enjoyed coaching various sports programs and teaching Driver's Ed. He was very passionate about guiding his students and faculty alike with compassion and wisdom. Jerry married the love of his life, Barbara Brooks April 11, 1959 in Caledonia, Ohio, and she survives him at home.

Outside the classroom, Jerry was an integral part of the community. As a member of Trinity Baptist Church, he found joy in both worship and service, teaching Sunday school and building faith and fellowship among peers. His faith was matched only by his affection for family—he loved his children and especially cherished his grandchildren, enthusiastically attending their sporting events and activities, always their biggest supporter. Jerry would often drop everything in a moment’s notice to help his grandchildren whenever they needed him. Jerry enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: the sound of wood being cut, the camaraderie of a good softball game, and the excitement of watching the Reds and the Cleveland Indians play. He delighted in time spent piecing together jigsaw puzzles, watching the Hallmark channel, the Christian network, and playing BINGO. One of Jerry’s travel highlights in life was being able to visit family in Japan. Through both quiet moments and lively gatherings, Jerry’s warmth and humor left an imprint that will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

He leaves behind three children who brought him immense pride: his sons, Daniel (Sally) Gorby, David Gorby, and his daughter, Kathy Dotson as well as eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his siblings, C. Milan Gorby Jr., Ronald Gorby, Robert Gorby, Arlene Watkins and Marilyn Painter.

Family and friends are invited to honor Jerry’s memory during a visitation on September 4th, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the Timson & Melroy Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 pm with Pastor Ed Goodwin officiating. Graveside service will follow in Caledonia Cemetery. There will be a fellowship meal at Trinity Baptist Church following the committal service.

The legacy Jerry leaves is woven through the generations he taught, the family he nourished, and the community he steadfastly served. He will be remembered with respect, admiration, and abiding love.

The Timson & Melroy Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Jerry Gorby.
