David Leroy Marshall

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dave Marshall, age 67, who left this world peacefully on Friday October 17th after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Bucyrus Ohio, to Issac and Betty (Brecount) Marshall, Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. For 45 years, he was married to the love of his life, Becky Marshall, sharing a lifetime of laughter, hard work, and unwavering love. Together they built a beautiful family that became the center of his world.

Dave dedicated almost 40 years to the steel industry at Marion Steel followed by Nucor Steel, working as a forklift operator. His teammates nicknamed him “Gravy” because he often made difficult tasks look simple. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and quiet pride in a job done right. Beyond his work, he was a true tinkerer at heart—someone who could fix just about anything. Whether it was a small engine, a household project, or an old car, he believed there was always a way to make it work again. He preferred to build and repair rather than buy new, finding joy and purpose in the process of creating and restoring.

Outside of work, Dave enjoyed his garden, even when the weeds sometimes had the upper hand. In recent years, he developed a fondness for raising backyard chickens with his granddaughters, sharing the fresh eggs with friends and family. His lifelong love of cars and engines kept him busy in his garage restoring his classic Firebird or working on whatever project he and his son-in-law dreamt up.

Above all else, family was everything to Dave. He never missed a birthday, holiday, or grandchild’s event, and he found his greatest happiness in simply being together. His love for family gatherings—sharing meals, laughter, and stories—was the heartbeat of his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife Becky, children; Amanda “Mandy” (Dan) Berry and Sam “Lee” (Rachel) Marshall; grandchildren; Katrina and Damon Marshall and Zivah & Zalyah Berry, (who were the light of his later years) sisters; Tina (Rick) Weir and Pat (Dennis) Logan, sisters-in-law Terry Bailey and Cathy Marshall, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ed, Steve, and Gary.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of love, hard work, and resourcefulness will live on through those he leaves behind.

Visitation for Dave will be held at the Timson & Melroy Funeral Home on October 23rd from 12:00-2:00 P.M., followed by a funeral service at the same location at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to OSU James Cancer Research or Marion Heartland Hospice in his memory.

Though he is gone from our sight, he will forever remain in our hearts.
