John L. Detwiler, born on November 15, 1941, in Morrow County, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025. A devoted family man, John leaves behind a legacy marked by his passion for work, his love for his family, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. The youngest child of the late James and Emma Mae (Cooper) Detwiler, he was known as “Johnny” to his siblings.
A proud graduate of Caledonia High School, class of 1960, Johnny was deeply involved in various sports, including football, basketball, and track, as well as participating in 4-H activities during his youth. These foundational experiences shaped his work ethic and passion for learning, leading him to a successful career that spanned decades. He married the love of his life Linda Carter August 19th,1961 in Caledonia, Ohio and she survives him at home.
John dedicated much of his working life to the Pillsbury/General Mills plant, where he retired after making significant contributions as the superintendent. His innovative spirit allowed him to drive for continuous improvement in production lines.
A self-taught engineer and a workaholic at heart, he possessed an extraordinary ability to fix anything, which extended from home improvement projects to cars and machinery. With his love for woodworking and carpentry, he built multiple buildings on his own property, reflecting both his skill and his relentless drive. John embraced learning in all forms, constantly seeking knowledge and new skills. His commitment and work ethic earned him the admiration and respect of those around him.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, John had a variety of hobbies and interests that illustrated his character. He cherished fishing and enjoyed being on the water, where he frequently maintained multiple boats. He shared his love of Lake Erie with his children, who have in turn shared that love with their own children.
John is survived by his loving wife, Linda (Carter) Detwiler; his children, John Jason (Jennifer) Detwiler and Michelle (Mark) Dunn; brothers Robert Detwiler and William (Debbie) Detwiler; sister Dixie (Bob) Noggle; as well as grandchildren Emily Lane, Jacob Hersh, John Patrick Detwiler, Kaitlyn Detwiler, and great-grandson Bodhi Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, James Detwiler and Richard Detwiler.
Friends and family are invited to honor John's memory during visitation on July 25, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Timson & Melroy Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Terry Burkhardt officiating.
John L. Detwiler will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and industrious nature but also for the profound love he had for his family and the joy he found in life's endeavors. His spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
