John "Rusty" Russell Boger Jr., affectionately known as “Bubba,” passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at the age of 67 at Grant Hospital. He was born on January 28, 1958, in Marion, Ohio, to John Sr. and Judy (Fletcher) Boger. Rusty was a proud son, loyal brother, devoted husband and father—but his most cherished role was being “Bubba” to his grandkids.
A 1976 graduate of River Valley High School, Rusty went on to earn his Associate’s Degree from Hocking College in 1978. He was a true “Jack of All Trades”—always curious, always learning, and always ready with a story or a thoughtful conversation. Rusty never met a stranger and had a special way of making people feel welcome, whether he was in line at the store or in the middle of the woods.
Rusty worked hard his whole life, spending 23 years at Glen-Gery Brick and 22 more at Cardington Yutaka Technology. He took pride in everything he did, earning the admiration of coworkers and lifelong friendships along the way.
Outside of work, Rusty was deeply connected to the land and his community. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, reflecting his love of hunting and conservation. He was also active in the Ohio Farm Bureau and the Beekeeper Association, serving as a bee inspector in Marion and Morrow counties during the ‘90s and early 2000s. For a time, he also served on the Ohio Search and Rescue Team out of Mt. Gilead.
Rusty loved the outdoors—hunting deer, pheasant, and turkey was his happy place, especially when shared with family and friends. He found joy in gardening, in working the land, and most of all, in being with his family. Being “Bubba” brought him endless pride and laughter, and he treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Sandy; his children, Jared (Billie Jo) Boger and Shelby (Carl) Hutchison; his grandchildren, Raelyn "Scout" Boger, Dawson Brown, Remington "Remi" Boger, Gatlin "Gabby" Hutchison, and Rawley Boger; his mother Judy; his brother Jim (Michaela); and several nieces and nephews. Rusty was preceded in death by his father, John R. Boger Sr., and his sister, Jackie Chappelear.
Rusty had a spirit of adventure that showed in everything he did—from completing two rounds of the Tough Mudder to conquering the Texas Water Safari, a grueling 260-mile canoe marathon known as the "World's Toughest Boat Race." He approached life with grit, determination, and a lot of heart.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Rusty's life at the visitation on July 18, 2025, at Timson & Melroy in Caledonia, Ohio, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be held on July 19, 2025, at Caledonia Cemetery at 10:00 AM, with Gar Chappelear officiating.
Rusty will be deeply missed—but the stories, laughter, and love he shared will live on through everyone lucky enough to have known him. His legacy is written in the lives he touched, especially in the hearts of those who called him Bubba.
The Timson & Melroy Funeral Home, 407 S. Main Street, Caledonia, Ohio is honored to serve the family of Rusty Boger.
