Lanny Showers, age 74, a beloved figure in the Caledonia community and devoted family man, passed away on October 4, 2025, at Riverside Hospital. Born on December 17, 1950, in Marion, Ohio, as the son of the late Vernol Eugene and Norma Lou (Weston) Showers. Lanny graduated from River Valley Class of 1968 and went on to marry the love of his life Robin Schreck August 10, 1974 in New Washington and she survives him at home. Lanny led a life filled with hard work, passion, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones.
Lanny devoted much of his professional life to agriculture, working with notable companies such as Landmark, Monnett & Waldo, and Royster Clark. His deep roots in farming began in childhood as he worked alongside his father and uncle, fostering a lifelong connection to the land and was later joined by his son Brandon when he was little. Lanny received the Ohio Grain Achievement award in 1968. His ventures extended beyond traditional roles, as Lanny also owned and operated the Dairy Bar and the Showers Carryout in Caledonia, where he became a cherished part of the local business landscape. Lanny was not only dedicated to his career but also actively engaged in his community. He was a proud member of the Friends of the American Legion Worcester Post 401, reflecting his commitment to service and camaraderie with his peers. Lanny received the State FFA Degree in 1968 and was awarded River Valley's First American Farmer Award in 1971.
Lanny possessed a wealth of interests and hobbies that brought joy to both himself and those around him. He was known for his culinary skills as a gourmet cook, capable of creating a wide array of delightful dishes, with a particular talent for desserts and breads made from the “good flour", which Robin has plenty of. Lanny enjoyed golfing, bowling and immersing himself in books, often found curling up with westerns, Sci-Fi literature, and novels by James Patterson. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, cooking shows and "This Old House" on Saturday mornings. Lanny was known for his famous 4th of July celebrations with family and friends, where he would showcase his spectacular cooking skills. His resourcefulness shone through his ability to fix anything electrical or automotive, showcasing his remarkable talent and practical knowledge. Lanny loved going to Cedar Point with the family and riding the roller coasters. Lanny also sponsored/co-owned Tommy's Toy, a 1967 Chevy with Tommy Ruth.
His role as a father was one of his proudest accomplishments, particularly as he helped his daughter, Courtney, with her 4-H and FFA projects. Lanny was a steadfast supporter of his family and particularly enjoyed spending quality time with them. Lanny also enjoyed rooting for the Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Lanny is survived by his children, Brandon Showers, Courtney (Shaun) Greer, sister, Debbie (Mark) Shealy and his grandchildren; Sadie, Storey, Xavier, Natalia, Tyler, Jay, Brooklyn and Johanna.
